For some of the laboratory tests, special preparation before the examination is required. The tables below provide instructions for the preparation of the patient for testing, unless the doctor advises differently.
BIOCHEMICAL TESTS
TOTAL CHOLESTEROL (T-CHO), HDL,LDL, VLDL | 12-hour fasting before blood sampling (only water and coffee without sugar allowed) |
TRIGLYCERIDES(TG) | 12-hour fasting and abstinence from alcohol before blood sampling |

FOLIC ACID | 8-hour fasting before blood sampling. |
AMMONIA | 8-hour fasting and avoid smoking before blood sampling. |
ALL APOLIPOPROTEINS | 12-hour fasting before blood sampling. |
LACTATE DEHYDROGENASE ENZYMES (LDHI ) | The patient should be fasting before blood sampling and avoid alcoholic drinks. |
BLOOD HORMONES TESTS
GROWTH HORMONE (GH) | 8-hour fasting and immobility 30 minutes prior to blood sampling. |
RENIN calmness and fatigue (upright and laying) | 24 hours before testing, the intake of caffeine, diuretics and antihypertensive medication is forbidden. |
GASTRIN | 12-hour fasting before blood sampling. |
ALDOSTERONE CALMNESS AND FATIGUE | 15-35 days prior to blood testing, patient should avoid diuretic and antihypertensive medication. For 3 weeks patient should be on sodium diet (100-200 mmole / 24h). |
Δ4 ANDROSTENEDIONE (Δ4Α ) | The blood sampling should be done during morning hours to avoid fluctuation levels which are normal during the day. |
TG | Surgery, biopsy, scintigraphy and therapy with radioidine should be avoided before the blood sampling. |
Blood collection for thyroid testing (T3, T4, TSH, FT3, FT4, ANTI-TG,ANTI-TPO) | If you are under medication, avoid taking the pill before the testing - Testing can be done at a later hour as well. |
ADRENALINE | Fasting and abstain smoking for four hours before the blood sampling. |
ANTI-DIURETIC HORMONE (ADH ) | 8-hour fasting before blood sampling. The blood collection should be performed during morning hours. |
PARATHYROID HORMONE (PTH) | 12-hour fasting before blood sampling. The blood collection should be performed during morning hours. |
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) | Fasting recommended before blood sampling. The blood collection should be performed during morning hours. |
URINE TESTS
GENERAL URINE INVESTIGATION AND URINE CULTURE | Collect urine (preferably during morning hours) from the middle of urination in a special sterile container (that can be purchased from the pharmacy). Urine must be delivered to the laboratory within an hour after collection, or else placed in the refrigerator or in a container with ice cubes prior to its delivery to the laboratory. The urine culture should be performed before receiving antibiotic therapy. If antibiotic medication has been started, inform laboratory staff. |
METHOD FOR COLLECTING URINE of 24 HOURS CYCLE | First urination of the day should be skipped. From the second urination to the first urination of the second day, all urine is to be collected in a special sterile container (that can be bought from pharmacy). If necessary, use second container. All urine should be collected otherwise the procedure must be repeated. During the collection and until its delivery to the lab, the urine should be kept in the refrigerator. |
CULTURE SAMPLING
VAGINAL FLUIDS CULTURE | Collection during menstrual period should be avoided. Avoid internal or external washing with antiseptic soaps. Washing with soap only externally. No vaginal suppositories. No sexual intercourse. |
CULTURE OF URETHRA SAMPLES | Avoid sexual intercourse and urination for two hours prior to testing. |
PROSTATIC FLUID CULTURE | Avoid urination for two hours prior to testing. |
STOOL CULTURE AND PARASITICAL INVESTIGATION | Only a small amount is necessary. |
OTHER TESTS
MAYER STOOL TESTING | Patient should avoid iron medication, aspirin intake or eat meat for three days. |
BLOOD SUGAR CURVE | Blood sampling should be performed before any meal. Patient is given glucose as instructed by medical staff and blood is collected every half hour or every hour, for 2.5 to 3 hours. It is recommend that the patient to be accompanied. |
SPERM DIAGRAM | Abstinence from sexual intercourse for 4 to 6 days is recommended. Testing should be performed only weekdays (not Saturday). Sample must be delivered early in the morning to the lab, within an hour from the collection (do not bring it in the afternoon because the sample is monitored by the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 12th hour). |
PAP INVESTIGATION | 4 days abstinence from sexual intercourse is recommended before testing, 10 days after the first day of menstrual cycle (first day of bleeding). |
